 About Loose Vagina

It is not possible to have a loose vagina because vaginas are elastic and meant to stretch. Your vagina can become slightly looser with age or childbirth, but won’t necessarily be “loose.”

What is a loose vagina?

A ‘loose vagina’, as the name suggests, is a condition where a woman may feel that her vagina is hanging abnormally loose and no longer feels as tight as before.

In certain cases, a vagina might not only lose its laxity but can also hang so loose that it can result in symptoms like loss of sensitivity, small but frequent urinary leakages and decrease in sexual pleasure.

How does it form?

A loose vagina can primarily be a result of two factors, which are:

Age: A vagina might become slightly loose with ageing. As a woman enters the perimenopausal stage, the estrogen levels begin to drop, making the vaginal tissue thinner, drier, less acidic and more flexible. These changes may be more noticeable once a woman reaches the menopause stage.

Childbirth: This is one of the primary reasons for a vaginal muscle losing its laxity. During childbirth, the vaginal muscles are stretched to an extent so that the baby can be pushed out. Even though the muscles contract over a period of time, the elasticity of the vagina may not remain the same as before.

DIAGNOSIS

A condition of loose vagina is usually found out by a woman herself. If you are diagnosed with the condition, you may sense a certain looseness in your vagina which is followed by a number of symptoms such as:

  • Loss of sensitivity

  • Decreased sexual pleasure

  • An abnormal sensation of something hanging loose and falling out of place

  • Urinary leakage while coughing, sneezing, while exerting physical pressure

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

However, you should consider consulting a gynaecologist to diagnose your condition with accuracy and get your loosened vagina treated accordingly.

Exercises to fix Loose Vagina:

  • A good place to start when it comes to tightening up a loose or wide vagina is pelvic floor exercises.

  • If there is only a small amount of muscle laxity, then a few exercises may prove effective.

  • To exercise your pelvic floor, you should squeeze and draw in your anus at the same time while simultaneously closing and drawing your vagina upwards.

  • You should do this quickly several times before slowing down and holding the contractions for as long as you can, up to 10 seconds, before relaxing.

  • For the best results, you should repeat each exercise 10 times, between four and six times a day.

  • These exercises can be done standing up or sitting down. It can take time for pelvic floor exercises to work.

  • You may also wish to try pelvic tilts.

  • These exercises are very easy, all you have to do is stand with your shoulders and bottom against a wall, making sure that you keep your knees soft.

  • You’ll then proceed to pull your belly button inwards so that your back is flat against the wall. Tighten the stomach for four seconds before releasing the hold.

Risks & Complications if left untreated:

  • If a loosened vagina is left untreated for a long time, it can interfere with a woman’s daily life by causing the following symptoms:

  • Urinary incontinence or inability to control the urge to urinate

  • Incessant itching around the area

  • Vaginal dryness

  • Foul-smell due to bacterial vaginosis (infection)

  • Formation of abscess

  • Rupture

There are no proven ways to prevent a vagina from loosening. Vaginal loosening occurs as a result of unavoidable circumstances such as ageing or childbirth. However, there are a number of self-care measures that can help by not letting the condition proceed into a further stage. Some of them are:

  • Performing Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles

  • Eating collagen boosting foods like berries and avocados

  • Maintaining body weight by performing exercises

  • Avoiding strenuous activities

  • Eating high-fiber foods and plenty of fluids to avoid constipation

  • Quit smoking to avoid coughing

Vaginal surgery can involve both the tightening of the vaginal pelvic floor, as well as rebuilding and reinforcing the perineal muscles on the outside of the vagina. Often referred to as Vaginoplasty, this is a reconstructive operation and rebuilds the pelvic floor in cases where women have experienced severe stretching of the vaginal tissue and muscles, as well as the perineal body at the entrance of the vagina, strengthening the muscles and reducing vaginal laxity.

  • Laser/Radiofrequency Vaginal Tightening: This is a non-invasive treatment that uses laser energy or radiofrequency waves to cure vaginal laxity. During this procedure, the gynaecologist inserts a sanitized laser probe inside the vagina. After inserting the probe, the doctor projects laser energy from the probe on the vaginal tissues to stimulate the production of collagen. As a result, the vaginal muscles are tightened. This procedure is carried out in several sessions that take less than even 30 minutes.

  • Creams, gels and pills: There are a number of vaginal tightening creams, gels and pills that solely focus on tightening the vaginal wall. But, these items do not help in relieving the symptoms associated with a loose vagina such as urinary incontinence. Before using any of these, it is highly important for you to get consulted by the doctor. Applying gels or creams can cause infections and allergic reactions and may lead to complications that can be severe.

Surgical Treatment

  • Vaginoplasty: This is a surgical procedure to treat a loosened vagina. During this procedure, the patient is kept under sedation or anesthesia. The surgery typically involves either the pulling of the pelvic floor muscles closer together and removing any loose and excess skin, or a combination of the two. This results in a tighter and restructured vagina.
